Manuscritos Mexicanos, 1715-1842.

Transcripts, made chiefly in 1850 from archives in Mexico, of various documents relating to California, Texas, Louisiana, Canada, and Mexico, largely in the handwriting of Robert Greenhow, although a portion is in that of his wife, Rose. Contains table of contents. Documents 1-8 relate to the Provincias Internas, 1786-1812, including letters from the Spanish Court to Viceroys of New Spain; instructions from José de Gálvez to Ugarte y Loyola; and correspondence referring to relations with the United States. Nos. 9 and 10 give a resume of the history of New Spain from the time of Cortés to 1821, with a list of viceroys and governors. Nos. 11, 14-18a, and 22 relate to the missions of New Spain, 1716-1842. They consist of reports drawn up by Revilla Gigedo the Younger and Father Palóu and Mangino, orders for division of the California mission field between Franciscans and Dominicans, and Domingo Ramón's account of his 1716 expedition to Texas for the encouragement of missions. Nos. 12, 12a, and 13 deal with exploration of the northwest coast of America, i.e., accounts of the 1774 Pérez voyage and of the 1775 Hezeta-Bodega-Ayala expedition (first portion), with Bodega's account of the 1779 Arteaga-Bodega expedition-from which the final paragraphs are omitted. Nos. 19-21 and 23-30 bear upon Hispano-Franco-Anglo-American disputes in the New World, and the disputed territories, 1689-1824, i.e.: diaries of Domingo Ramón and Juan Antonio de la Peña on the 1716 and 1720-1722 expeditions to Texas; diary on Alonso de León's 1689 expedition to Espíritu Santo Bay; excerpts from de La Harpe's diary on journeys of St. Denis, with related documents; letters from Athanase de Mézières and Ripperdá to Teodoro de Croix, and from Claiborne to Secretary of State Madison; and miscellaneous reports and summaries involving conflicting colonial claims.

Rose O'Neal Greenhow (1817-1864) was a famous spy for the South during the Civil War. Her nicknames were Wild Rose and Rebel Rose. She was born in Port Tobacco, Maryland, in 1817.
